A trip to both the oldest and the newest lands in Europe
Could you just imagine that one of the oldest regions in Europe is next to one of the newest one, and both regions can be found in Romania’s Dobrogea?
In Dobrogea we can find the oldest mountains in Europe, mountains over 5000 meters high in the past, but due to the passage of time reduced to just 469 meters height. We will find here the remains of the ancient Greek colonies, the remains of the Romans’ settlements, as well as we are going to explore the Black Sea Coast, get acquainted to the best Romanian wines and not only.
Here we can also find a region waiting to be born, the place where Danube flows into the Black Sea, the Danube Delta. The Danube Delta is a developing biosphere, unique in the world and it gains 1 meter of land every year in its fight with the Black Sea. In this trip we will mix history with nature, amazing food with fabulous wines, old landscapes with wild nature of the Danube Delta region.
We continue towards the Black Sea visiting some amazing historical sites on the way. The cave where ST. Andrew is rumored to have lived when he came to this region to Christianize it. Now the cave is the most important religious place for Romanians, who are proud to say that Romania is a Christian country. We continue and visit the Adamclissi archaeological site, and see how the Romans defeated the local Dacians in the first Roman-Dacian War between 101-102 AD.
After the tour we shall have lunch with another wine tasting at Murfatlar vineyard. Murfatlar was established by the Communist regime to satisfy the Russian demands on wines, in order to pay part of the II WW debts established by Russia to its former enemies. In the afternoon we will arrive in Constanta, practically the oldest city in Romania. The city was built by the ancient Greeks and then inhabited by the Romans, it survived under the Ottoman rule and taken back by Romania at the end of the 19th century when Doborgea became part of Romania.City tour and free dinner. Accommodation at a 4* Hotel in Constanta.
Today we travel to one the few natural biospheres worldwide – the Danube Delta. On the way we shall:
• drive through Mamaia, the best Black Sea resort, and
• stop to visit Histria, one the first Greek Black Sea colonies stop at Enisala, the ruins of an impressive military fortress
• Lunch on the way at a local family. We continue to the 5* Hotel New Egreta, where you can enjoy a luxurious SPA, and have free dinner.
Another special day ahead. We will leave by small motor boats to Sulina, a successful harbor in the past, the capital of the south Danube society. Where the Danube flows into the Black Sea, we will visit a light tower which was built 120 years ago at the edge of Black Sea but due to changing geography it now lies 100 m from the water. Lunch at a local family. In the afternoon we return to our hotel so you can enjoy the sauna, the SPA, and the swimming pool. Free dinner, but a mandatory wine tasting.
We shall drive towards Braila. We will drive along the Danube, visit the most interesting monasteries from Dobrogea, named Cocos and
Niculitel. On our trip we will visit the oldest mountains in Europe which due to the passage of time have been reduced to small hills. The landscape is impressive as being granite mountains they still possess the outlook of ordinary mountains but lack in the height. We will have a nice picnic in this picturesque area.
