
Traditions in July
Its huge panorama spreading between Gaina summit and ,,La Targ” , in places connected with the battles fought by the Moti, a very old tradition, according to witch the lads come to the „Maidens Fair” , to choose their future wives, is every year a kaleidoscopic and dynamic gathering where economic exchanges are concluded and the people from Alba, Bihor, Cluj and Hunedoara counties meet in a brotherly spirit to make merry and attend a rich display of folk art.
After halting on the eve of the feasts at the foot of the mountain – which in the course of centuries was named „Gaina cu ouale de aur” (The Hen with the Golden Eggs ), by the light of fires and fir torches lighting the way from Campeni and Avram Iancu , Vascau, and Bulzesti, where livel „opening” parties are held – at down, groups of people start headed by fiddlers, for the ridges from where come the sounds of the tulnic and youthful dances. And high up on the plateau, the eyes can take in the entire beauty of the Moti realm, this place where historical events and legends seem to come to life in the mighty upsurge of the present.
Dancers from Stremt, Ocna Mures, Crisani, Brad, Bosorod or Geoagiu the renowned girls from Capilna – potters from Cristior, Halmagel, Obirsia, Tirnavita or Carpinet; tulnic, and pipe makers from Vidra, Ponorel, Avram Iancu, Budureasa, makers of distaffs, ploscas or pitchers from Ocisor or the Aries Valley; sumanari from Sirbesti; feast with cherry and cornel brandy; Moti dances such as the Moti land has been called, with incomparable poetry, where a vast concourse of the people in a riot of colours and a general feeling of the joy to be alive and enjoy oneself, lend the moments special charm with witty sallies, present in the lively and suggestive funny „strigaturi” (homours or satirical verse chanted during some folk dances).
Love Dance
Last Sunday of July – Vaideeni, Vilcea County
Apt to become one of the most representative events of pastoral artistic creation all over Romania this gay folklore holiday, starting from the ancient traditions of the nedeias occasions, amid typical highland scenery, suites of concerts given by vocal and instrumental ensembles with a genuine traditional repertoire, tableaux of ethnographic character and original symposium with the participation of expert researchers and interpreters of pastoral folklore.
This festival enjoys the constant participation of the ensembles of „fluierasi” and „bacite” from the counties of Arges (Corbi), Sibiu (Poiana Sibiului, Boita), Gorj (Polovragi, Novaci) and Vilcea (Vaideni, Hurez, Babeni, Mihaesti). Other popular pastoral ensembles from Alba, Hunedoara and even from farther away have announced they would take part in the next editions.
Sea Celebrations
The week previous to the first Sunday of August – Constanta
and the resorts along the sea shore.
Culminating with „Navy Day” held the first Sunday in August, the „Sea Celebrations”, a vast event, planned to last one week, begins with a splendid carnival consisting of pageants with allegorical chariots and masks, great folklore performances in Ovidiu, Lapusneanu and Soveja acquires as well in the sports Hall, all in Constanta.
The programs of the various annual editions include among many other things, literary, musical and choreography recitals, sound and light performances, plays staged in a natural setting („Medea”, „A Night at Venice”, „The Braggart Soldier”, etc) and amusing popular feasts, nautical contests, sails entertaining games, etc.
During the same period, in Costanta the young pioneers carry on attractive cultural and artistic activities, the most remarkable being the National Brassband Festival and the Competitive Exhibition „The Golden Bracelet” displaying the handicraft articles made by the younger generation.
