Romanian - Moldavian Wine Tour 2010

Wine is inseparable of the Romanian culture, an important component of our art and philosophy. During this tour you will meet, feel and taste the wines of one of the most famous regions in Romania, Moldavia. The history was cruel with this region, being splitted after the 2nd world war in two parts, one is the Romanian region of Moldova and the other being the old Basarabia, now known as Republic of Moldova. But both regions are linked by their famous and good wines! Come and meet the passion for the Moldavian wines; after visiting the biggest wine cellar in Europe and maybe in entire world, and tasting the wonderful Moldavian cuisine and music you will see that wine in Moldavia goes best with traditions, both still terribly appreciated in the European Culture!
Wine makes mind and understanding clear, turns out sorrows, gives happiness and joy. So let’s find joy in Romania and not only...

Day 1.

Arrival in Chisinau from Viena or Frankfurt. Departure to Purcari winery, the best one in south-eastern part of Moldova. The Purcari wines used to be appreciated in Europe alongside the famous wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. They were ordered to the tables of historic figures as the Russian Emperor Nikolay II, British King George V and British Queen Victoria. Special wine tasting, dinner and accommodation. In case there are more guests you will be kindly asked to accept to share your room, even if you booked single (and you will receive a nice bottled gift…. The one you liked more ….)

Day 2.

Today we invite you to discover TIRASPOL (capital of Transnistria) - the old USSR is still alive and well in Transnistria. It is a breakaway territory within the internationally recognised borders of Moldova. Here we will enjoy a brandy tasting and lunch. During the city tour we will stop at different monuments in the city and if time permits visit the Football Academy. Afternoon departure to Chisinau, accommodation in a 4* Hotel Leogrand and in the evening we will depart by bus to have a wine tasting in the underground wine city Milestii Mici, registered in the Guiness Book of Records for being the biggest Wine Collection in the world. It contains over two million bottles of wine highly appreciated by the winemakers from all over the world. The wines lie right there, at a depth of 80 meters, in bottles covered with dust and mould, in small elegant houses which are completed every year. Return to our hotel and for those who want we can do a club tour to the most famous clubs in Chisinau.

Day 3.

We will dedicate half of this day to enjoy the Wine Festival in the capital of Republic of Moldova. You will have the chance to see the traditions connected with wine making and taste the new wine just in the main square of the city. Moldova has instituted a National Wine Holiday, which is held on the second Sunday in October. This formalizes an old tradition that, as soon as the new wine had settled, the wine grower invites friends and neighbors to taste the new wine. Everyone joins the winegrowers in the "hora" dances at wine holiday time. City tour and departure towards the historical complex from Orheiul Vechi, the most famous place in Moldova. Here you will see an Orthodox cave monastery called“St. Maria Dormata” that was expanded and modified inside the cliffs by the monks over the centuries and has been preserved in a functional state. After the visit we will have wine tasting and dinner  at one of the best Moldovan wineries,  Chateaux Vartely.  Accommodation i the complex of Chateau Vartely.

Day 4.

Today we depart to Romania. In Cozmesti, a region famous for its wines we will collect grapes, make your own wine and enjoy it in the field along with a grilled lamb. Throughout the day you will be accompanied by the merry music of the gypsies (this band accompanied even Goran Bregovici).  In the evening! Surprise!! in a monk monastery we will enjoy a blessed wine... and have the opportunity to hear Byzantine church music sang by a student’s choir from the Theological University of Iasi. Same accommodation.

Day 5.

Departure to Transylvania, one of the most mysterious regions of Romania. Here the Saxons developed an amazing culture, which unfortunately fades away with the passage of time. The famous fortified churches, the Saxon fortresses, their beautiful cities are all places of great interest. The route goes over the most beautiful gorge in Romania, Bicaz Gorge. Lunch at Lacul Rosu, based on local trout. Our journey continues to Sighisoara, the birth city of Dracula and a UNESCO site. It is the most visited Saxon medieval citadel from Romania, mentioned for the first time in 13th century. After accommodation to a 4* Hotel located in a 300+ years old Hotel, we start our walking city tour. In the evening we hope you will not be disappointed by having a local plum brandy tasting and after, dinner based on game.

Day 6.

Departure to Brasov. First stop will be at Viscri. (Weisskirch as the old saxon were calling this village). Here we will talk to the mayor who is a saxon lady and her mother. You will enjoy their dialect and also be amazed of what people can do if they want to and are well organized. Also you will see what Prince Charles Foundation is doing in this region to save this civilization. Be prepared for an exceptional plum brandy and local wines. Lunch at a local family. Afternoon we continue to Brasov. City tour, accommodation in our 5* Hotel Aro and free dinner.

Day 7.

After breakfast departure to Sinaia to visit the Peles Castle, the summer residence of the Romanian king’s family. After the visit we will enjoy a combined wine and champagne tasting in Azuga, a facility which belongs to Halewood Romania group, one of the leading wine producers on the local market. They also produce the oldest brand of the Romanian sparkling wine ”Rhein Extra” (from 1892). Afternoon we depart to visit the famous Dracula Castle and return around 17.00 to our Hotel. We will enjoy a special dinner with classical music at the Citadel Restaurant.
